Overseas Driver Licence.

Driving in NSW with an Overseas Licence

If you hold an overseas licence and want to drive in New South Wales (NSW), you must follow the legal requirements set by Transport for NSW. At U-N-Me Driver Training, we ensure that all our students meet these requirements before starting their lessons.

Rules for Overseas Licence Holders

1. Visiting NSW (Temporary Residents & Visitors)

You can drive with a valid overseas licence as long as it is current and written in English.

If your licence is not in English, you must carry an official English translation or an International Driving Permit (IDP).

You must follow all NSW road rules and licence conditions.

2. Moving to NSW (Permanent Residents & Long-Term Visa Holders)

You can use your overseas licence for up to 6 months from the date you arrive in NSW.

After 6 months, you must obtain an NSW driver’s licence to continue driving legally.

If you are from a recognised country, you may be able to exchange your licence without testing.

If your country is not recognised, you will need to pass a knowledge test, Hazard Perception Test, and driving test.

3. Licence Verification

Transport for NSW may require your licence to be verified before you can book a driving test.

Suspended, cancelled, or expired overseas licences are not valid for driving in NSW.

A valid overseas licence (original, not a photocopy)

An official English translation or IDP (if required)

If you are unsure whether your licence is valid for lessons, please contact us before your booking.
